May 19th — Hospital Trip

Around 6:00 AM Eli woke up asking for a drink. My wife got it for him and things seemed normal. But around 6:30 we noticed he was just staring off to the right toward the headboard and wasn't really responding to us. We tried a few things to get his attention and he just wasn't there. By 7:00 we decided something else was going on and after looking him over, we thought he might be having some kind of seizure activity. We grabbed a flashlight to check if he would follow the light — he didn't — and that's when we made the call to head to the hospital.

We got there at 7:27. They brought us right back and got to work. They gave him Keppra along with a couple other anti-seizure medications, one of which basically restarts the brain. They had to put a mask on him and help him breathe for a bit until he was able to do it on his own. They were close to putting an NG tube in to let the air out of his stomach but he took care of it himself, which we were grateful for.

Once he was stable they set up transport to the main campus. My wife rode with Aunt Heather and I rode in the ambulance with Eli. I got him to laugh once on the way there, which was a good sign.

We spent the rest of the day and night in the ICU. They've been running tests to figure out what's causing the fever and what lowered his seizure threshold. They did a nasal swab panel for respiratory illnesses and pulled some blood cultures. They also noticed a PVC irregularity in his heartbeat that they're keeping an eye on to figure out if it's related to whatever he's fighting or just the stress on his body right now.

We're still waiting on some answers but he's being taken care of and we're right by his side. Thank you all for the continued prayers and support — it means more than you know.
